Preparing the Port of Rotterdam for sea level rise

CHALLENGE:

The Port of Rotterdam is one of Europe’s safest ports. But as climate change elevates sea levels, the probability of flooding rises. The client wanted to assess its flood vulnerability, form adaptation strategies, and raise awareness of the possible risks, as well as exploring flood resilience measures.

SOLUTION:

• Mapped and analysed flood risk scenarios for the years 2050 and 2100

• Modelled the probability of loss of life, as well as economic and environmental damages

• Proposed structural and non-structural flood protection adaptations 

RESULT:

• An effective, widely accepted flood risk adaptation strategy

• Strategic investment and decision-making based on data   

• Remains one of the safest ports in the world
